The Junnar exacavation:
The site of excavation: (Early excavations):
Prior to the dig conducted in the present season of 2008-09 between March 25th and 30th, an excavation had been conducted by the Deccan college on a much larger scale in the last season on the same site.
The purpose of this was to clear the vegetation and soil off the archeological mound and uncover an ancient settlement that would be dated to the period of the Satavahanas i.e. between the 1st cent BC and 4th cent AD.
During the previous excavation a total number of 16 trenches were dug. The major problem that most archaeologists face is that the modern habitation of Junnar rests on top of the ancient archaeological mound, making excavations very tedious and difficult.
Season 2008-09:
An excavation was undertaken under Dr. Shinde, in whose absence Dr. Jadav had taken over. The archaeological mound is located near the river Kukdi, at a distance of about 100-150 meters. The soil around the banks of the river was alluvial in nature.
Datum line 0pt is the highest point of mound. Datum line to the trench (SW direction) quadrant 3.26 meters. Trench peg 3.00 + 0.26 = 3.26 meters.
Horizontal sequence – cultural excavation 2.10 meters random ruble mercenary fixed in black cotton soil in 3 quadrants. Cultural sequence, we find relation between Satavahanas and Maharashtra.
• During this season, only one trench was excavated i.e. trench F15.
• The main purpose of this was to reach the virgin layer of the soil.
• However due to encounters with rock beds, the aim of the excavation could not be fulfilled.
• A trench measuring 18 x 15 was dug to a depth of 7 and half ft (1.83mts)
• The trench was divided into four quadrants.
• Except NW, full of land ruble in three courses.
• Brick wall – three courses. Trenches from west to east.
• (F14) another wall (east to west) next season exposure of F14/F16
• Charcoal and pottery in different layers.
Stratification:
In all there were roughly about 08-09 different layers.
• The first layer was of disturbed soil.
• The grayish layers have been identified as habitation layers.
• There also exists a blackish layer which is a sterile layer or a layer of in-activity
Antiquities:
• Antiquity – beads, pendants, coin (led) Nahapana, very good condition iron type.
• Shell bangles, beads, coins are found also regular wheel
• Bowls, roof tiles, NPP (12 x 1.5) RPW (Roman Amphora), RW (5 x 5) B&R ware, also NBPW
• Perforated shell used for ornamentation.
• A microlith stone tool found at 2.29mts.
Early historic sites in Junnar, Golegaon, Kusur, Nirgode, and so on (sites contemporary to each other). The date we get in Junnar very similar to Paithan, Ter, Siddhapur and Bhon
